Akoma Holdings Inc
Housing Information
Thank you for your interest in applying for housing at Akoma Holdings Inc (AHI).
AHI is focused mainly on creating community on the 320 acres of land which formerly was the site for the Home for Colored Children. AHI is a not-for-profit organization that, in the process of building community, recognizes the need to create housing for the African Nova Scotian community. The homes will be a mix of affordable (30% of gross income that goes towards rent) and market rate homes. The homes presently available for rent are 3 and 4 bedroom row houses located in the Lake Loon Cherry Brook area. Two of the three bedrooms will be affordable and one of the four bedrooms will be affordable. The rest will be market rate rents.
Are you Eligible?
To determine your eligibility please fill out the attached Eligibility Checklist form that is attached to this information sheet. There will be different requirements for those applying for affordable housing versus those who are applying for market rate housing. The same application will be used for both.
If you are eligible complete the Housing Application form and deliver by email or in person to Akoma Holdings Inc. If you need a hard copy of the application one can be picked up from the admin office located at 19 Wilfred Jackson Way.
Or you can fill out the housing application which can be found on the website at https://www.akoma.ca – Properties – Lake Loon. This is a fillable PDF that can be submitted when completed along with your eligibility checklist. Or you can print it off and once it is filled out you can hand deliver or scan and email it to AHI.
Process after your submission of the housing application
Once you have submitted your application you will receive a notice of receipt. In order for the application to be entered into the review process all information requested must be submitted. If not, it will be put in an incomplete file and not reviewed until completed. Sending an incomplete application will not hold your spot in the review process.
Completed applications will be assessed based on the housing criteria that we have established. We will only contact those who are deemed eligible to proceed to the next step. If you are considered eligible a list of potential tenants will be created based on AHI housing criteria. If there are spaces available we will place the highest scoring applicants first who have requested housing that we have available. All applicants that have been determined eligible will be interviewed.
If there are no spaces available we will create a wait list. If you are placed on the wait list the length of time you are on the wait list will be based on future availability of the type of housing that you are looking for.
If your situation changes
If any of your housing or personal circumstances change let us know as soon as possible. Your change may mean that we now have something that would accommodate you. Please make sure that we have your most up-to-date contact information. If we do not and we attempt to contact you and are not able to do so we will go to the next applicant on the list.
