In 2021 Akoma contracted Regenerating Roots and Bespoke Cultural Collective to develop Africentric Design Guidelines (ADGs) and Akoma Outreach and Engagement Guidelines (OEG’s).
Akoma Holdings Africentric Outreach & Engagement Guidelines
The report on the Akoma Outreach and Engagement Guidelines (OEGs) aligns with the Africentric principles to include ANS collective visions and reliance upon community participation at every stage of the planning process. This outreach and engagement process included the sharing of information and gathering of feedback, to inform the design of the individual Akoma facilities and communal spaces.

Africentric Design Guidelines for the Akoma Village Development 2022
A primary objective of the Akoma Village Africentric Design Guidelines (ADG) is to provide clarity and yet maintain flexibility in creating building designs and development layouts that reflect the goal and vision for the Akoma Community that is rooted in the ideology and practise of Africentricity. The ADG provides an understanding of the AKOMA Community development; its vision, ambitions for the site, potential users, as well as adjacent resources. It also includes desk research of relevant precedent examples of Afrocentric design, and a study of the visual and material culture of the African Nova Scotian (ANS) community.
